WASHINGTON, D. C. – Rep. James Moran (D-PA), who faced a year-long ban after his bill of health care, told U. S. Senator Orrin Hatch (D-GA) he would get his bill back within the House. His bill, which would require a prescription of Viagra for patients with heart disease and a private health insurance plan, would make sex more widely available to women.
Moran is the only member of the House and has been a vocal opponent of health care reform for years. The senator introduced a bill Tuesday that would require women to have a prescription for Viagra, but a bill that would require men to get their prescriptions for it would be the only option.
"I'm in the middle of a debate over whether or not Viagra is a good treatment or not," he told U. News this week. "There are a lot of issues in this world today, and that's the problem. But the solution for me is to get this bill done. I don't want to do that."
Moran was also a Republican, though he had been the Democratic front-runner. He has been a member of the House for eight years and the House has been split on his fate. His bill would require women to get a prescription for a generic version of Viagra, which would be available for up to two years.
The bill is based on an amendment by Moran that the House is considering to make it easier for men to get an automatic prescription for Viagra. The amendment, which was introduced by the House Democratic majority leader, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Investigations.
Moran said Tuesday that he is opposed to the idea of giving women access to the medication, but will support a amendment to his bill that would require men to get their prescriptions for the drug for a second time.
The bill would require men to have a private health insurance plan to help cover their medical expenses.
Moran has proposed the bill in the last several months, which came to his attention last month.
But the measure has faced opposition from critics in Washington. The bill, which was introduced Friday by Senator Charles Schumer, would require women to have a prescription for Viagra for up to two years, and women who have health insurance coverage would have to meet their annual deductible and pay for the prescription.
Moran said he wants to pass the bill through the House, where lawmakers have been trying to pass it in his bid to get health care for more than a decade.
"It's a really important bill, but I'm not going to pass it through the House," he said. "I'm not going to pass it through the Senate."
Moran said he is opposed to giving women the medicine because they might have a history of heart problems or a history of stroke.
"I don't think we're going to have a discussion on whether Viagra or any other treatment is a good treatment," he said. "We're going to have to talk about the issue of Viagra. It's not about whether I am a good person or a bad person."
Moran has said he would not use the bill to get his bill into the House.
"There are times when the only thing I am willing to give a bill to a lawmaker is for the health care that they need to provide," he said. "But there are also times when the only thing I am willing to give a bill to a lawmaker is for the health care that they need to provide."
Moran said that he would like to pass the bill through the House instead of the Senate. He said he would not go into details of the bill's contents, but he believes the House would like to pass it through the Senate.
Moran said he is not sure why the House would pass his bill through the Senate. The bill is based on an amendment by Senator Schumer, which he introduced in May, and the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Oversight and Investigations. Schumer has not directly called for the bill to pass through the Senate, but he said he has been impressed with the bill's prospects in passing it through the Senate.
He said that the bill had been passed with a favorable reaction to the House's decision to allow men to get the generic version of Viagra.
"That's good," he said. "And we certainly don't want to let it slip from my hands.
